Direct messages (chat)

Status: Available How one-to-one private messaging works in your community, and its current limits.

Direct messages let members talk privately, one-on-one. It's part of the always-free social layer, so any signed-up member can use it without buying anything.

Who can message whom

Any member can message any other member. There's no need to be connected or following first.

The one exception is blocking: if one member has blocked the other, they can't message each other. (For how blocking works, see the connections guide below.)

What a message can include

A direct message conversation supports:

  • Text
  • Images
  • Files
  • GIFs
  • Reactions on individual messages
  • Read receipts (members can see when their message has been read)
  • Typing indicators (members see when the other person is typing)
  • Presence (members can see when someone is online)

What chat doesn't do (yet)

A few limits to be aware of:

  • One-to-one only. There is no group chat. Every conversation is between exactly two members.
  • No editing or deleting messages. Once a message is sent, it can't be changed or removed.
