Direct messages

Status: Available How private one-to-one messaging works in your community, and its current limits.

Direct messages let you talk privately with another member, one-on-one. It's part of the free social layer, so any signed-up member can use it without buying anything.

Who you can message

You can message any other member, and any member can message you. You don't have to be following or connected first.

The one exception is blocking. If either of you has blocked the other, you can't message each other.

What a message can include

A conversation supports:

  • Text
  • Images
  • Files
  • GIFs
  • Reactions on individual messages

While you're chatting you'll also see:

  • Read receipts, so you know when your message has been read.
  • Typing indicators, so you can see when the other person is typing.
  • Presence, so you can tell when someone is online.

What direct messages don't do

A few limits worth knowing:

  • One-to-one only. There's no group chat. Every conversation is between exactly two members.
  • No editing or deleting a sent message. Once you send a message, you can't change it or take it back, so give it a quick read before you hit send.
